Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita spoke by telephone with his French counterpart, Stéphane Séjourné. The exchange «focused on the positive bilateral dynamics as well as regional and international issues», Moroccan Foreign Ministry announced on X.
This phone call comes a month after the last official meeting between the two ministers, which took place in Paris on April 9. Bourita and Séjourné also met in Rabat on February 26. Since then, Morocco and France have tried to mend diplomatic ties.
Paris has recognized the Moroccan Sahara «economically». This was demonstrated on April 26 by the announcement by the French Minister of Economy and Finance, Bruno Le Maire, of the financing of a 3-gigawatt power cable between Casablanca and Dakhla.
A decisive step, like a summit between the leaders, is needed before a political decision can be made. «As far as the diplomatic question is concerned, it's between the two heads of state that it will be managed and settled. I have nothing to announce to you today», said Stéphane Séjourné in an interview with French public media on April 7. Rabat and Paris have not yet set a date for the long-awaited summit between King Mohammed VI and President Emmanuel Macron.
