Although not provided for by law, the ban on women without marriage certificates staying in hotels has been lifted, particularly in the cities of Fez and Rabat, where this practice was commonplace. Cited by Le360 on Sunday, a major hotel in Rabat confirmed that police had «contacted them the day before» to instruct them to «no longer apply» this provision.

According to Médias24, the lifting of the restrictions also concerns single women residing in the city where they are staying, as well as unmarried couples. This change comes just days after a majority of deputies in the Council of Representatives (RNI, PAM, Istiqlal) requested a meeting with Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahbi at the Justice, Legislation and Human Rights Commission.

Last Tuesday, the minister admitted to the House of Representatives that the practice of banning women without marriage certificates from hotels in several cities is illegal. There is no law providing for this measure, only an old administrative note that has led to verbal instructions over the years. Minister Ouahbi called this practice «discriminatory».
