SAREX Detroit 2024 : Morocco simulates maritime crisis to test Response teams

Agriculture Minister Mohammed Sadiki led the launch of «SAREX Detroit 2024», a maritime search and rescue exercise, Wednesday, May 29th. Running until May 31st off the Tanger Med port, the event is part of the operation for the transit of Moroccans residing abroad. It mobilizes significant human and material resources to simulate a crisis at sea and assess the responsiveness of Moroccan intervention teams, according to a press release.

Various high-ranking personalities attended the opening ceremony of SAREX Detroit 2024, including representatives of the Royal Armed Forces, the Spanish Guardia Civil, and numerous maritime security and rescue experts.

The scenario for SAREX Detroit 2024 involves a fire occurring on board a passenger ship, requiring the immediate evacuation of 60 people, including several injuries. To address this critical situation, the Royal Navy, the Royal Gendarmerie, the Royal Air Forces, Civil Protection, the General Directorate of National Security, and the Department of Maritime Affairs are coordinating by combining their efforts and expertise.

«The SAREX Detroit 2024 exercise that we are organizing responds to our constant concern to enhance the capabilities of coordinators and rescue teams in handling a major sea event», Minister Sadiki said. «It also allows us to evaluate the effectiveness of our technical and material capabilities to adequately respond to distress situations at sea».

SAREX Detroit 2024 tests the procedures for managing complex large-scale search and rescue operations, as recommended by the International Maritime Organization and the International Civil Aviation Organization. The active participation of Spain in SAREX Detroit 2024, with the deployment of significant air and maritime resources, demonstrates the mutual commitment of Morocco and Spain to ensuring maritime safety, in accordance with international agreements.
