Moroccan government's self-censorship on bootleg alcohol tragedy

The tragedy of the homemade liquor that occurred in the rural commune of Sidi Allal Tazi was brought up at the press briefing on Thursday, June 6, by Mustapha Baitas, the Minister of Relations with Parliament and Civil Society, and government spokesperson.

«Regarding the tragedy», Baitas said, «there is a statement from the regional delegation of the Ministry of Health, and a judicial investigation has been opened which should…» He then paused for a few seconds, glanced at his papers, and without answering the question fully, moved on to the topic of social dialogue between the executive and its social partners.

For the record, a statement from the regional delegation of the Ministry of Health, published on Wednesday, reported «the death of 8 individuals, including 7 in the Kenitra region. These deaths were recorded among the cases transported to the provincial hospital of Kenitra, while another individual died at Skirej Hospital located in Souk El Arbaa du Gharb».

The same source specified that «from Monday, June 3 at 6:00 PM to Wednesday, June 4 at 8:00 AM, 114 cases of methanol poisoning among residents of the rural commune of Sidi Allal Tazi, territorially attached to the province of Kenitra were recorded».
