Foreign green energy projects in Sahara anger Polisario

The Polisario Front criticizes the involvement of international companies in green energy projects within Western Sahara. In a statement, the Front complains about «the growing number of foreign companies the Moroccan government has involved in illegal investment projects in Western Sahara's renewable energy sector, particularly solar and wind power, as well as green hydrogen production».

Polisario calls upon «the United Nations and the African Union to fulfill their responsibilities in this regard», emphasizing that «Western Sahara remains a territory awaiting decolonization and therefore under the legal and moral responsibility of these international institutions».

This is not the first such criticism from Polisario. In August 2023, the separatist movement threatened to target employees of foreign companies operating in Western Sahara, particularly those involved in renewable energy projects.

«These investments will yield no benefit for the companies involved», a Polisario representative in Europe stated. «They risk losing their investments and endangering the lives of their workers». However, these threats appear to have been disregarded by the foreign companies operating in the region.
