Schengen Visa Rejections : Algerians spend €13 million, Moroccans €11 million

In 2023, Africans received 704,000 negative responses for their Schengen visa requests, spending €56.3 million on non-refundable visa fees, according to the 2023 Schengen Visa Statistics for Schengen Countries.

Algeria was the country of origin for the most rejected applications in 2023, accounting for 10.18% of the total spent on rejected applications. Algerians also had the highest number of rejected applications, with 166,260 out of a total of 474,032 requests (35.07%), spending €13.3 million on visa fees.

Moroccan nationals come next with 136,367 visa requests rejected in 2023, representing 8.3% of the total denied visas. Moreover, Moroccans spent €10.9 million on rejected visa applications in 2023.

Moroccans are followed by Egyptians, who spent €3.7 million in non-refundable visa fees. Then come Nigerians with €3.4 million, Tunisians with €3.1 million. Cote d’Ivoire is next with €1.9 million spent on non-refundable visa fees, followed by Lebanon (€1.7 million), Angola (€1.6 million), Kenya (€1 million) and South Africa (€776,880).

Overall, Schengen visa rejections generated €130 million in 2023. In the previous year, the amount was only estimated at €105 million.
