On Friday, June 21 in Rabat, the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs shot arrows towards Algeria. During the press briefing held with his Burkinabe counterpart, Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, Nasser Bourita stated that «the Kingdom is against foreign interference in the affairs of Sahel countries».

Morocco opposes, he emphasized, the «policies of lesson-givers and those who believe that, because they have borders with the Sahel, can opt for a policy of blackmail».

«In the Sahel neighborhood, there are countries that want to manage the situation through blackmail and solve their problems at the expense of regional stability», he denounced. Foreign minister Bourita also added that Rabat's approach to the Sahel issue is rather «in a logic of trust in the capacity of these countries to solve their own problems».

The minister welcomed the adhesion of Sahel countries to the initiative launched on November 6, 2023, by King Mohammed VI to allow them access to the Atlantic Ocean. «It was not about presenting a turnkey initiative to the Sahel countries, but about allowing them to appropriate it (...) Today, we are in a joint construction of this initiative to provide a common response and for the concerned countries to contribute», he indicated. The senior diplomat announced that the Task Force set up by Morocco, Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso focused, two weeks ago, on the operationalization of this initiative.

«It is time today to trust the Sahel countries to help them develop their own vision. They do not need tutors but partners», he affirmed.
