A planned Jewish-Muslim conference in Morocco has been canceled, citing anti-Israeli pressure, according to Israeli media.
The Times of Israel-owned news website zman reported that a major Jewish-Muslim conference was scheduled to take place in Casablanca at the end of May. Organized by an association called Mishrim, the event was expected to be attended by senior officials from the Moroccan government and parliament, as well as heads of Jewish organizations in Morocco and Israel.
Royal Advisor André Azoulay was also expected to attend the three-day conference, originally scheduled from May 22 to 24. However, according to the newspaper, the timing raised questions due to its proximity to the war that began the previous October.
Postponed and then canceled
Shortly before the event, invitees received notice that the conference had been postponed to June 24 due to coordination issues. Last week, they were informed that the conference had been postponed indefinitely.
«Anonymous participants quoted by the newspaper» attributed the cancellation to anti-Israeli pressure on the Moroccan street, which they believe convinced organizers to cancel the event.
Israeli writer and tour guide Avraham Avizmar, an expert on Israeli-Moroccan relations, was among the invited participants. He was expected to arrive in Casablanca with other Israeli guests, including retired Major General Meir Khalifi, former military secretary to Prime Ministers Benjamin Netanyahu and Ehud Olmert, and retired Brigadier General Amir Avivi of the " «Habithonistim» movement.
Avizmar reportedly stated that the conference was also expected to be attended by Moroccan Speaker of the House of Councillors Enaam Mayara, who «intended to invite his friend Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana to the event. In the end, Ohana did not receive the invitation».
The newspaper attributed the main reason for canceling the conference to «the anti-Israeli atmosphere on the Moroccan street due to the war». They report that protests against Israel continue, and authorities feared riots in Casablanca if the conference proceeded.
