Following a social media uproar, the King Fahd School of Translation in Tangier, affiliated with Sultan Abdelmalek Saadi University, issued an apology for designating Amazigh, an official language of Morocco alongside Arabic since 2011, as a «foreign language» in a recent announcement.
The school said, Thursday in an official apology, that it was an «unintentional mistake» and assures the public that the issue has been corrected. Said announcement, shared both online and hang at the school, now reflects the accurate status of Amazigh.
The statement also clarifies that the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research is not responsible for the error. The King Fahd School emphasizes its autonomy in creating such internal documents, given its unique specialization in translation and interpreting training.
The school expresses «deep apologies to all Moroccans» and highlights its commitment to the officialization of Amazigh. This commitment is evidenced by the creation of a new translation course specifically incorporating the Amazigh language, the school said.
The apology concludes by reaffirming the school's dedication to the national project of promoting Amazigh. They pledge to utilize all available resources to comply with the Moroccan Constitution, Framework Law No. 51.17, and the government's plan for the officialization of the Amazigh language.
