After France's recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara, Algeria has decided to withdraw its ambassador from Paris. In a press release published Tuesday by the Algerian Foreign ministry, Algiers denounced the decision announced earlier the same day by President Emmanuel Macron to King Mohammed VI.
«The French government has declared its absolute and explicit support for the colonial reality imposed on the Western Sahara region», argued Algerian diplomacy, claiming that «this step, which no previous French government has taken, has been taken by the current government with great disdain and indifference, without any insightful assessment of its consequences».
By recognizing «the Moroccan autonomy plan as the sole basis for resolving the Western Sahara conflict within the framework of alleged Moroccan sovereignty», the French government, according to Algeria, «violates international legitimacy, denies the right of the Sahrawi people for self-determination, and contradicts all the tireless and persistent efforts made by the United Nations to complete the decolonization process in Western Sahara, in addition to evading its special responsibilities as a permanent member of the Security Council».
«In light of this French move, Algeria decided to withdraw its ambassador to the French Republic with immediate effect. Its diplomatic representation in France will henceforth be assumed by a chargé d'affaires».
Earlier today, a statement from the Royal Cabinet stated that in a letter addressed to King Mohammed VI, French president Emmanuel Macron officially announced that «the present and the future of Western Sahara fall within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty».
In the same letter, the French president assured the King of «the steadfastness of the French position» on this issue related to the national security of the Kingdom and that his country «intends to act in harmony with this position at the national and international levels».
