One day after France officially recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara in a letter from President Emmanuel Macron, King Mohammed VI responded with a letter expressing appreciation for Paris's «clear and strong position on the Moroccan Sahara».
In his letter sent on Wednesday, July 31, the Moroccan monarch thanked President Macron for his «personal commitment to strengthening the partnership between our two countries».
«I fully appreciate the clear support your country has shown for Morocco's sovereignty over this part of its territory, and the firm backing of France for autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty as a resolution to this regional dispute. This upholds Morocco’s 2007 proposal as the sole basis for resolving the issue», King Mohammed VI wrote.
He added that through this stance, «France is contributing to strengthening the international momentum already supported by many countries and helping to end a conflict that belongs to a bygone era».
The king also expressed his desire to host President Macron in Morocco for a state visit, with the dates to be arranged through diplomatic channels.
For the record, the French President announced in his letter to the King that a visit to Morocco would take place soon. «Very attached, like Your Majesty, to ensuring that the relationship between France and Morocco can continue to grow and strengthen, I hope to be able to visit Morocco soon at Your invitation».
