A Moroccan man was kidnapped, forced to transfer $170,000 worth of bitcoins, and then killed in Kyiv, Ukraine, by four men, according to police on July 29.

Quoting a police source, local newspaper Kyiv Independent reported that the victim, who was from Morocco, was abducted from outside his house in Kyiv’s Solomianskyi district around midnight. The four men, who have been arrested and charged with kidnapping and murder, took the victim to an abandoned building, where they coerced him into transferring cryptocurrency to their digital wallets.

The man was then strangled to death and buried in a forest, police said. CCTV footage released by the police shows the moment of the kidnapping.

Ukrainian police reported that the four men, aged 24 to 29, had planned the crime in advance after learning the victim held bitcoins worth several million hryvnias. They traced his address, abducted him around midnight, and took him to the abandoned building.

There, they forced him to transfer bitcoins to their crypto wallet before killing him. To cover their tracks, they altered the car's license plates and appearance, then buried the body in a forest and converted the cryptocurrency to cash.

During the investigation, police seized the money, car, and other evidence. A police operation led to the arrest of the four men, who face up to life imprisonment if convicted.
