Chefchaouen has just been featured in a list of the «20 Most Beautiful Cities in the World» by Architectural Digest (AD), an American monthly magazine founded in 1920 and specializing in interior design and landscaping.

The list was compiled by AD based on a city’s architecture, cultural treasures, historical relevance, and natural appeal.

«The best cities offer something that can’t be found anywhere else», wrote AD in July. And Chefchaouen checked all the boxes, ranking 8th on AD’s list of the 20 most beautiful cities in the world.

«Few cities can inspire a traveler to book a trip based on a single photo, but Chefchaouen, the northern Morocco mountain town bathed in blue, is one of those places», exclaimed AD.

«And the reason for all the azure is even more beautiful than the soothing shade itself. In the 15th century, Jewish refugees fleeing the Spanish Inquisition painted the buildings blue as a reminder of the heavens and God’s power above. In the subsequent centuries, residents kept up the tradition».

AD’s list includes Adelaide, Australia in the first spot, followed by Tallinn, Estonia in 2nd, Portsmouth, Dominica in 3rd, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico in 4th, Antigua, Guatemala in 5th, Singapore in 6th, and Paris, France in 7th.
