Morocco has responded to Algeria's recent intervention at the UN Security Council, where Algeria called «for self-determination for Western Sahara». In a countermove, Rabat accused Algeria of denying the same right to the Kabyle people.
During the August 12 Security Council debate, Algeria's Foreign Ministry condemned Morocco's «occupation of Western Sahara». In response, Moroccan Ambassador Omar Hilale sent letters to the Security Council President and members, highlighting Algeria's alleged hypocrisy. Hilale argued that the Kabyle people have been subjected to decades of occupation, marginalization, and human rights abuses by Algeria.
Morocco's ambassador called on the UN to ensure the Kabyle people's right to self-determination, mirroring Algeria's demands for other populations globally.
It's worth noting that the Movement for the Self-Determination of Kabylie (MAK) declared the creation of an independent «State of Kabylia» on April 20. Morocco has yet to officially comment on this development.
