The 80th anniversary of the Allied landings in Provence in 1944 served as the backdrop for a significant meeting between Moroccan and Tunisian officials. On the sidelines of the event, Tunisia's Foreign Minister, Nabil Ammar, met with Morocco's Prime Minister, Aziz Akhannouch, as reported by the Tunisian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a press release, accompanied by a photo of the meeting.
During the discussion, Akhannouch and Ammar explored ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation between Tunisia and Morocco. The meeting underscored the shared commitment to enhancing economic and political ties between the two nations and addressing the current challenges in their relationship, according to Tuniscope, a Tunisian media outlet.
Tensions between the two countries escalated in August 2022 when Morocco recalled its ambassador to Tunis in protest against Tunisian President Kaïs Saied's reception of Polisario leader Brahim Ghali at the eighth TICAD summit held in Tunisia on August 27 and 28, 2022. Tunisia responded similarly by recalling its ambassador from Morocco.
However, in October 2023, Nabil Ammar reassured the Tunisian press that there was «no rift between Morocco and Tunisia; no hostility exists». He expressed optimism by announcing the «imminent return of the two ambassadors to their embassies».
Recently, Ammar emphasized that the meetings between Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya are not intended as «an alternative to the Arab Maghreb Union, which remains a strategic choice and a civilizational achievement that Tunisia and its sister member states continue to strive for, while working to overcome obstacles to its realization».
