A northern European citizen who has been holidaying in Morocco has become the first suspected monkeypox case in Ceuta, local media reported. The patient has been admitted to the University Hospital of Ceuta on Monday, where he is under isolation.
After showing symptoms of monkeypox, the patient's samples have been sent to the Carlos III Institute in Madrid.
The patient was expected to be transferred last Tuesday but instructions were given to admit him to the isolation area and patient monitoring as soon as the administrative procedure that would allow him to cross the border was resolved, health authorities told Ceuta TV.
According to the same source, the exact nationality of the patient, as well as his age and current condition, are unknown.
It is also not known whether the severity of his illness will force him to be treated in Ceuta or whether he will be transferred, in the near future, to his native country.
