The International Organization for Migration (IOM), a leading United Nations agency, has launched an awareness-raising campaign to combat the devastating effects of climate change in Morocco.

In a press release sent to Yabiladi on Friday, IOM stated that this initiative sheds light on the complex relationship between migration, the environment, and climate change, a major issue for Morocco's future.

IOM's campaign consists of a series of three impactful video vignettes that «highlight the often-overlooked realities of millions of Moroccans who are already suffering from the impacts of the climate crisis».

The first video, «Gender and Climate Migration», focuses on the disproportionate impact of climate change on women in Morocco. It emphasizes the crucial role women play in the local economy while highlighting their increased vulnerability to environmental challenges.

The second video, «Livelihoods and Climate Migration», explores the dramatic consequences of water scarcity and droughts on livelihoods, particularly in rural areas. It demonstrates how these conditions lead to population migration to urban centers.

The third video, «Multisectoral Approach and Youth Involvement», underlines the importance of a coordinated response involving various sectors of society. It also highlights the crucial role played by Moroccan youth.

IOM explained that the aim of these videos is to explain the challenges of the climate crisis and its direct and indirect repercussions on Morocco in a language that is accessible to all.

Present in Morocco since 2007, IOM has been working with governmental authorities, institutional entities, international partners, United Nations Agencies, the academic world, and associative actors to address migration issues.
