After an initial acquittal, Muslim academic Tariq Ramadan has been sentenced to three years' imprisonment, with one year to be served, for the rape of Brigitte (a pseudonym) in 2008. On Tuesday, the Criminal Appeal and Review Chamber issued its ruling, overturning the first-instance verdict from the trial held from May 27 to 29.

RTS reports that during the first-instance trial in May 2023 at the Geneva Correctional Court, Ramadan was acquitted due to reasonable doubt. His last resort now is an appeal to the Federal Court, which his lawyers may pursue.
