The Moroccan League for the Defense of Human Rights (LMDDH), affiliated with the Istiqlal Party, is advising Moroccan craftsmen and entrepreneurs against traveling to Algeria. «From a human rights perspective, Algeria is not a safe country», the NGO states in a press release.

The same warning was also issued to «those who wish to visit this country for family reasons. They risk being subjected to arbitrary arrests and unfair trials. Witness the arrests and trials of over 500 Moroccan citizens on various charges». The League claims that «Moroccan detainees have been languishing in Algerian prisons for over a year without being charged or brought to justice».

The NGO emphasizes that «the grave developments occurring in Algeria regarding the treatment of Moroccan citizens are deeply concerning and demand urgent action from all relevant parties». And it calls upon «the Moroccan authorities, in fulfilling their responsibility towards their citizens, to adopt a firm stance and demand the immediate release of Moroccan detainees in Algeria».

Indeed, Algeria regularly announces the arrest of Moroccan nationals for «espionage», «irregular migration», or «human trafficking».

It is worth noting that Algeria reintroduced visa requirements for Moroccan nationals last week.
