Moroccan journalist's 2M suspension sparks union concerns

Journalist Ouadih Dada has been suspended from his duties at 2M, a Moroccan television channel. Dada, the editor-in-chief and presenter of the weekend newscast «Info soir», has faced criticism from his management due to his external services. The union to which he recently affiliated has questioned the timing of this suspension.

Journalist Ouadih Dada has been suspended from his duties at 2M, in accordance with an administrative measure related to his services outside the national channel, in which he allegedly used his position within the public institution. Editor-in-chief and anchor of the weekend edition of the French-language newscast, he has been suspended pending a disciplinary hearing.

This is not the first time such a measure has been taken against him. In a press release, the National Union of the Moroccan Press (SNPM) described the decision as «arbitrary», even «punitive», linking it to the journalist's recent affiliation with the union branch within 2M. The SNPM, in particular, questions whether this suspension is a form of «reprisal», following a general restructuring meeting attended by several journalists, including Ouadih Dada.

In this respect, the union raises concerns about the context of the suspension in relation to its representativeness, given that the sanction came from the news department, whose manager is affiliated with the Federation of the National Press, Media and Communication, part of the Moroccan Union of Labor (UMT).

Union leaders call for calm among 2M staff members

Reacting to the controversy, union officials warned of «slippages» and inaccuracies that have accompanied the circulation of different versions of the story. They emphasized that the sanction is administrative in nature and unrelated to any union affiliations or political animosities.

On social media, union leader Mohamed Elwafy refuted «unfounded» speculation about possible «hostility towards SNPM-affiliated colleagues». «If we are in union competition, we still cooperate professionally every day and every hour with [these] colleagues (...) some of whom have held great responsibilities within the channel for many years—something that is incompatible with the absurdities published here and there without verification and far from any professionalism», he wrote.

In the same vein, he described relations with SNPM-affiliated colleagues as «normal», including those with Ouadih Dada and Abdelhafid Elmenaouar, who recently participated in the May 1st International Labour Day celebrations alongside the Federation. At the same time, he announced that «the trade union office is closely monitoring the matter and will be holding a meeting on the subject».
