Morocco-France : Bourita's message to Algeria

In an interview with the weekly magazine Le Point, the Minister of Foreign Affairs addressed messages to Algeria, especially following the cascade of Algerian reactions in the media and on social networks to Emmanuel Macron's visit to the kingdom.

«Morocco does not interfere in the relationships that other countries maintain with Algeria. We focus exclusively on our bilateral relations with our partners, leaving each country free to develop whatever ties it wishes with Algeria. This position is a clear and constant doctrine of His Majesty the King».

Nasser Bourita

«If Algeria perceives the strengthening of our relations with countries as a threat, that is their interpretation (...) Our priority is to advance our relations in accordance with our own interests», specified the head of diplomacy.

For reference, Algeria had withdrawn its ambassador to France in response to President Emmanuel Macron's recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara on July 30. This decision is reminiscent of the one taken by Algiers, on President Abdelmadjid Tebboune's orders, following the announcement on March 18, 2022, of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's support for Morocco's autonomy plan for the Sahara.
