The Minister of Foreign Affairs addressed the war being waged by Israel in Palestine during an interview with the weekly magazine Le Point. This comes at a time when a segment of Moroccan public opinion and certain parties are calling for the severance of relations with the Hebrew state.
«The resumption of diplomatic relations with Israel in 2020, within the framework of the tripartite Morocco-United States-Israel agreement, does not imply support for the Israeli government's actions. Morocco has firmly condemned, at the highest level, Israeli attacks against civilians, hospitals, and schools, deeming them unacceptable», Nasser Bourita reaffirmed.
«His Majesty the King, president of the Al-Quds Committee, immediately after restoring ties with Israel, reaffirmed his commitment to the Palestinian cause by calling the president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, on the same day (December 10, 2020)», he recalled.
«It must be understood that this step (resuming relations) does not mean abandoning the Palestinian cause, quite the contrary. The Moroccan position on the Palestinian question, which is, as His Majesty the King emphasized, a priority equal to the Sahara issue, remains unambiguous: this principled stance knows neither compromise nor silence; it is regularly expressed by the highest authority of the State».
The head of diplomacy also emphasized one of the kingdom's specificities: «Unlike the Middle East, our country carries within it a Jewish heritage anchored in its national identity. It is an inspiring model of coexistence where religion is not an obstacle».
The 2011 constitution emphasizes that «the Kingdom of Morocco intends to preserve, in its fullness and diversity, its one and indivisible national identity. Its unity, forged by the convergence of its Arab-Islamic, Amazigh, and Saharo-Hassani components, has been nourished and enriched by its African, Andalusian, Hebrew, and Mediterranean tributaries».
