Morocco's population nears 37 million in latest census

The Secretary General of the Government, Mohamed Hajjawi, has submitted to the government a draft decree to approve the final results of the 2024 General Population and Housing Census, which shows that Morocco's population has reached 36,828,330 people.

The government is preparing to approve a draft decree regarding «the figures determining the legal population of the Kingdom» following the completion of the final results of the 2024 General Population and Housing Census.

According to the draft text, the legal population of the Kingdom as of September 1, 2024, totals 36,828,330 people, an increase of 2,980,088 people from the 2014 census, representing an 8.80 percent increase.

The results of the 2014 census had confirmed that Morocco's legal population at that time was 33,848,242 people, including 33,762,036 Moroccans and 86,206 foreigners.

Regarding the total number of households revealed by the census, it reached 9,275,038 households, recording an increase of 1,961,232 households, or a 26.82 percent increase compared to the number of households in the 2014 census.

The number of foreigners residing in Morocco reached approximately 148,152 people, marking an increase of 61,946, or 71.85 percent compared to the number of foreigners in the 2014 census.

Concerning the population distribution by regions, Casablanca-Settat region led with 7,688,967 people, followed by Rabat-Salé-Kénitra with 5,132,639, then Marrakech-Safi with 4,892,393 people, Fes-Meknes with 4,467,911 people, and Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima with 4,030,222.

Souss-Massa region ranks sixth with 3,020,431 people, followed by Beni Mellal-Khenifra with 2,525,801, the Oriental region with 2,294,665, followed by Drâa-Tafilalet with 1,655,623, Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra with 451,028 people, Guelmim-Oued Noun with 448,685 people, and Dakhla-Oued Ed-Dahab with 54,161 people.

It should be noted that after the approval of the draft decree prepared by the Minister of Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit, by the government and its publication in the Official Gazette of the Kingdom, the High Commission for Planning will disseminate the detailed results of the census and publish all related data according to established procedures.
