The Polisario Front is seeking to adapt to the return of Donald Trump to the White House, the President behind the United States' recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara. The Front appears to be shifting its rhetoric towards the 47th President of the United States, as references to the «Trump tweet» have notably disappeared from recent statements by Oubi Bachir, speaking to a U.S. media outlet owned by the Department of Defense.
«We hope that Trump and his team will have learned lessons from the previous term and will recognize that the conflict is not as simple as they might have imagined», said the self-proclaimed Polisario representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva and the Swiss government. «There is clear international law, and there are allies of the Sahrawi people whose viewpoints cannot be ignored», he added.
Bachir further argued that the decision made by Trump on December 10, 2020—just one month before leaving office—«did not contribute to advancing the political process aimed at a peaceful and just settlement». He emphasized that «since then, the situation has grown tense on the ground and in the regional environment, with unprecedented tensions threatening to escalate at any moment».
It is worth noting that the Polisario was the party that unilaterally ended the 1991 ceasefire by initiating military attacks against Moroccan forces in the Saharan provinces on November 13, 2020.
