Morocco vs. Algeria : Battle for African Football League seat

DR
Estimated read time: 1'

The African Football League has not yet designated the country to host its headquarters. The AFL is a competition launched in 2022. Once again, Morocco and Algeria are vying for this strategic advantage in African football.

South Africa, Algeria's great ally on the continental stage, has also submitted its candidacy. Pretoria has not withdrawn in favor of Algeria, as Tunisia did this week by withdrawing its candidate for the CAF Executive Committee elections for the North African region, scheduled for March 2022, in favor of the president of the Algerian Football Federation.

In the absence of consensus, the African Football League has decided to appoint a technical commission to evaluate on-site the hosting structures of the three contenders, starting with the Kingdom, Algeria, and South Africa.

For the record, Rabat and Algiers had a race in 2023 to win the hosting rights of the 2025 Afcon. The verdict of the German office responsible for examining the candidacies was largely in favor of the Moroccan bid.
