Is Brazil's ruling Workers' Party (Partido dos Trabalhadores) shifting its stance on the Polisario? Recent developments in relations between Brasília and Rabat suggest so. «The autonomy plan for the Sahara presented by Morocco is based on the principles of dialogue and international law and should contribute to the well-being of the populations concerned», Romenio Pereira, the Workers' Party (PT) international relations secretary, told MAP.
«I think Brazil should offer more explicit support to the initiative proposed by the Kingdom and continue backing efforts that promote peace and stability in the region», he added.
These remarks align with those made by Brazilian Senate President Rodrigo Pacheco during his October visit to Rabat. He called on Brazil to consider Morocco's autonomy plan as «a realistic and pragmatic basis for a political solution, in line with UN Security Council resolutions», following his discussions with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita.
This marks a significant evolution in the PT’s position on the Sahara issue. In 2014, PT lawmakers voted for a resolution urging former President Dilma Rousseff, also from the PT, to recognize the «SADR».
Meanwhile, the Polisario has intensified its efforts in Brazil, organizing meetings with civil society representatives and local officials. In August, prominent figures from Brazil and South America penned a letter to President Lula, urging him to support «the independence of Western Sahara».
