A court in the Algerian city of Annaba recently sentenced a Moroccan craftsman to 15 years in prison for his involvement in an international migrant smuggling network.
According to Algerian media, the 31-year-old man was arrested in mid-March 2024 in Annaba at a construction workshop and did not have residency papers. After being investigated, he was charged with «smuggling Moroccan migrants into Algeria».
The same sources said that the Moroccan citizen «admitted to communicating with organizers of secret migration operations to Algeria», adding «that he merely advised Moroccans to migrate to Algeria and did not receive money for that».
Recently, Algerian authorities have intensified their monitoring of Moroccan craftsmen working in construction-related professions, often accusing them of espionage or joining human trafficking and irregular migration networks.
