The European Union (EU) is planning to give Morocco 200 million euros to support post-earthquake reconstruction, EU Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi said on Monday.
In a press conference held in Rabat following talks with Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, Varhelyi said that the EU plans to increase its total earthquake reconstruction aid to Morocco to 1 billion euros.
Morocco has been a «reliable» partner, he said, adding that the North African kingdom has received 5.2 billion euros in EU investments over the last five years, Reuters reported.
It is worth noting that in October 2024, the European Investment Bank (EIB) announced the signing of an agreement with Morocco for an amount of €500 million. This was the first tranche of a total loan amount of €1 billion to help rebuild public infrastructure in the regions affected by the earthquake of 8 September 2023.
