A Scottish mother had to leave her home in Morocco and return to Edinburgh, her hometown, after her six-year-old daughter’s dog was brutally captured and killed by the authorities.
The mother, Louise Smith, told Edinburgh Live that her daughter’s favorite pet dog, Bingo, was loaded into a van and killed by dog catchers in Marrakech, where she lived with her daughter Salma.
The 46-year-old mother, who spent years caring for local dogs as well as her family’s own pets, recalls the «traumatizing» moment Bingo was captured. Neutered and cared for by Salma since it was a puppy, Bingo was caught while being taken on a walk by the little girl.
«He was her treasured pet and such a sweet character. I tried to bargain with the dog catchers; I explained that Bingo was only outside for a wee wee, but they didn’t care. They didn’t care that my daughter was standing there», she sadly recalled.
«When they took Bingo, Salma was beside herself. She cut her knuckles banging on the door so hard. She was left standing in the street screaming as he was driven away», Louise said regretfully. «We knew that we would not see him again. I knew then that for our health, I had to get us out of Marrakech», the mother added.
Louise decided to leave Morocco and return to the UK for the sake of her daughter’s well-being following the incident.
Even after leaving Morocco, Louise and Salma remain committed to helping animals in need. They continue to send food for the dogs in their old neighborhood in Marrakech.
