Casablanca launches urgent plan to save Bouskoura forest

The true green lung of Casablanca, the urban forest of Bouskoura, plays a crucial role in ensuring the quality of life for residents and maintaining the region's ecological balance. It is also a vital space for relaxation and leisure. However, this emblematic forest, spanning over 3,000 hectares, is suffering from the cumulative effects of drought. The eucalyptus and pines that make up the forest are weakened, leaving them vulnerable to insects and diseases, which has recently caused a significant decline.

In response to this alarming situation, the National Agency of Water and Forests (ANEF) conducted a thorough phytosanitary diagnosis. The results reveal a severe decline in Aleppo pines and a moderate weakening of eucalyptus trees. To address these challenges, the ANEF has launched an emergency program for 2025-2026, which includes:

- Clearing 150 hectares of declining trees to slow the spread of pathogens.

- Silvicultural work on 3,000 hectares to strengthen the resilience of the remaining trees.

- A large-scale reforestation initiative covering 700 hectares, using species adapted to current climatic conditions.

Additionally, the ANEF is planning a second program aimed at enhancing the forest's landscape and modernizing recreational facilities to improve the experience for visitors.

While silvicultural work is essential to preserve the health of the forest and upgrade its infrastructure, these interventions may cause temporary inconveniences for users, including restricted access to certain areas for safety reasons.

The success of this program depends on the support of local stakeholders, civil society, and visitors. Everyone’s contribution and understanding are vital to preserving the multifunctionality and ecological heritage of the Bouskoura forest for future generations.
