The body of Moroccan footballer Abdellatif Akhrif, discovered on a beach in Oran, Algeria, has yet to be repatriated, five months after his disappearance at sea. According to well-informed sources, the delay stems from the complexities of administrative procedures between Morocco and Algeria.
The former footballer of Ittihad Tanger was reported missing in early July 2024, before his body was discovered on August 8 on the Algerian coast. On August 14, the Moroccan Royal Gendarmerie took DNA samples from the deceased's parents. These samples were sent to the Algerian authorities for comparison with those of the body found.
It was only on November 28, 2024, that the Moroccan authorities received a copy of the results, sent by the Algerian Consulate General in Casablanca. According to the report, there is a strong probability that the body is that of Abdellatif Akhrif.
On December 2, 2024, a copy of this document was sent by the Consulate of the Kingdom of Morocco in Oran to the General Prosecutor of that city. The objective was to ask the Algerian authorities to issue a death certificate and an authorization allowing the repatriation of the body to Morocco for burial.
However, these procedures are still awaiting an official response from the Algerian authorities, as these documents are essential to finalize the repatriation.
