Morocco is set to commence its new blueberry season with early variety harvests beginning in December. While production peaks between January and March, optimal availability is expected from April to June to meet growing international market demand. The 2024 harvest is projected to reach 80,000 tons, reflecting favorable seasonal conditions.
According to Blueberries Consulting and Agrimaroc, Juan Sainz from Frutta Group highlighted the advantageous climatic and agronomic conditions for this season. Freshplaza Newspaper reports that Morocco's position in the global market is strengthened by its focus on high-quality production, particularly attracting importers from Europe and the Middle East, with additional interest from Asian and North American markets.
The country has established its market position by introducing specific varieties that meet international requirements. Grown primarily in the Souss and Oriental regions, Moroccan blueberries benefit from ideal climate conditions and fertile soil, contributing to their quality characteristics.
Despite rising competition from emerging and established producers, Morocco continues to adapt through innovation and a focus on quality. Sainz noted that while last year saw supply challenges to North American clients due to pressure from European, Middle Eastern, and Russian markets, efforts have been made to better distribute commercial opportunities and avoid bottlenecks in 2024. The production maintains strict traceability and food safety standards in line with international requirements.
