After unsuccessful attempts to establish a lobbying entity within the European Parliament, the Polisario Front has shifted its focus to the Spanish Parliament, forming a group to advocate for its agenda. The group includes members from Podemos, EH Bildu, and Sumar, with a notable inclusion of the Popular Party's MP, Carmelo Barrio. This marks a significant alignment between the right-wing party and the Polisario Front.
Conversely, the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), led by Pedro Sanchez, has opted out of participating in the group. This body is primarily aimed at criticizing the government's endorsement of Morocco's autonomy plan for Western Sahara.
The PSOE's absence aligns with its previous actions. On March 14, 2022, PSOE deputies and senators opposed resolutions condemning the government's decision to support Morocco's 2007 proposal for resolving the Sahara conflict. Furthermore, during its last congress in Seville on November 29 and 30, the PSOE dismissed amendments favoring the Polisario Front.
It is noteworthy that the Polisario has previously accused Spanish Socialist MEPs of obstructing the renewal of its support group within the European Parliament.
