On January 1, 2025, five new non-permanent members began their two-year term on the UN Security Council. These are Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Somalia, and Panama.

These five states hold positions close to Morocco's on the Sahara issue. Somalia, Pakistan, and Panama indeed recognize Moroccan sovereignty over the territory. As a reminder, the Caribbean country announced in November the suspension of its relations with the «SADR».

Greece has not yet taken this step but adheres to the solution proposed by Morocco for settling this conflict. «Greece considers the Moroccan autonomy plan submitted to the United Nations as a serious and credible approach to reaching a solution» to the Sahara issue, stated former Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias, who currently heads the Defense Department, during a press conference held on January 15, 2020, in Rabat following his talks with Nasser Bourita.

Similarly for Denmark, which announced in a joint statement published on September 26 that it «considers the autonomy plan presented by Morocco in 2007 as a serious and credible contribution to the ongoing United Nations process and as a good basis for a solution agreed upon by the parties».

On the other hand, the Polisario has lost Mozambique, whose mandate expired on December 31, 2024. This African country, which recognizes the «SADR», abstained from voting on the latest Security Council resolution on the Sahara issue, adopted on October 31. The Front can still count on Algeria, which will continue to sit among the Fifteen until December 31, 2025.

The current composition of the Security Council includes five other members that recognize Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara : the United States, France, Guyana, and Sierra Leone.
