The first commercial export from Melilla to Morocco is scheduled for Wednesday morning, marking the end of a hiatus of more than five years since customs were closed in August 2018, according to Melilla Hoy. The operation will involve a pickup truck carrying household products, which will be inspected at the Beni Ansar crossing using a scanner.
«The exact timing of this operation has not been determined, but Moroccan authorities are expected to be present to document the event with photos», said businessman Luis Ramírez. «What surprises us is that the central government delegate, Sabrina Moh, did not notify the Melilla government, led by Juan José Imbroda, or the business association about this development», he added.
The same source noted that Sabrina Moh invited economic organizations in the city to a meeting on Thursday «to clarify the measures taken», but «this invitation came too late».
The president of Melilla, Juan José Imbroda, has warned against conditions reportedly set by Morocco for reopening commercial customs. According to Spanish reports, these conditions include allowing construction materials, fruits, vegetables, and fish to enter Melilla in exchange for the passage of specific goods determined by Moroccan authorities.
