Seven Moroccan migrants have been held hostage in a house in Thessaloniki, a Greek port city on the Thermaic Gulf of the Aegean Sea. The perpetrators, eight Greeks and a Pakistani, who formed the gang, were arrested this week, Greek daily Ekathimerini reported on Wednesday.
Gang members, who used physical violence and recorded the abuse, allegedly demanded €2,000 per person in ransom. The Moroccans were detained for two days while the perpetrators sent the videos to their families, demanding ransom.
The victims are believed to have arrived in Greece through the Evros River from Turkey with the help of migrant smugglers. They are believed to have been picked up by «gang members» who drove them to Thessaloniki, 300 kilometers west of the Greek-Turkish border, local media alleged.
The arrest took place after a family of one of the victims contacted the authorities. The gang members are facing charges of kidnapping, extortion, and organized crime. They are currently remanded in custody pending trial.
