Rabat's local administrative authorities and police have intensified efforts to preserve the aesthetic integrity of the city's architecture. Following crackdowns on satellite dishes and external air conditioning units, attention has now turned to unapproved alterations on building facades.

In the upscale district of Hay Riad, a notice was issued on Thursday to co-owners' associations, urging them to «restore the facades to their original state». This directive aligns with the Rabat City of Light and Rabat Green City initiatives, which aim to maintain the city's visual appeal. The enforcement is backed by Law 66.12, which addresses violations in construction and building, specifically targeting illegally modified balconies and terraces.

The notice, which has circulated widely on social media, calls for an «urgent intervention» with «residents and office owners» to dismantle any illegal constructions on balconies, facades, and roofs. This includes unauthorized eaves, plastic tents, tarpaulins, and makeshift roofs, often constructed from materials such as aluminum, steel, wood, tiles, and glass.

The document emphasizes the need to revert facades to their original state «in accordance with the provisions of the laws and regulations in force». It also mandates that all necessary actions be taken to compel residents to remove the violations within 72 hours of receiving the notice. Failure to comply could result in legal action, underscoring the authorities' commitment to maintaining the city's architectural integrity.
