Moroccan athlete Anass Essayi made national athletics history on Thursday, February 13, by breaking the indoor 3000-meter record at the Liévin Meeting in France. With a time of 7:32.45, he surpassed the previous record of 7:33.73, set in 2003 by the legendary Hicham El Guerrouj.

Despite finishing fifth in a competitive race dominated by Dutchman Niels Laros and several Kenyan specialists, Essayi stood out by claiming a record that had been maintained for more than 20 years.

This strong early-season performance confirms the rise of the 23-year-old Moroccan athlete. Just days earlier, he had already made headlines by winning the Metz Meeting in the 1500 meters with a time of 3:33.55 — the second-fastest Moroccan time in history for the indoor distance. His achievements signal a promising season ahead for the young talent.
