David Govrin, former head of the Israeli liaison office in Rabat, expressed his outrage at a demonstration in support of Palestine organized on Saturday evening in Marrakech, in front of the Koutoubia Mosque. In a message posted on X (formerly Twitter), he denounced the recurrence of Israeli flag burnings during these gatherings and called on Moroccan authorities to intervene to put an end to it.

«Burning Israeli flags during these demonstrations has become commonplace. Given the existing relations between Israel and Morocco, it would be appropriate for the local authorities to put an end to this phenomenon», wrote the former diplomat.

This statement sparked outraged reactions on social media, where several internet users denounced it as interference in the Moroccan public space. For some, David Govrin's remarks infringe on freedom of expression and assembly, rights guaranteed by the Moroccan Constitution.

It is worth noting that pro-Palestinian demonstrations are frequent in Morocco, and criticisms of Israel have intensified since the military offensive in Gaza.

While diplomatic relations between Rabat and Tel Aviv were formalized in 2020 as part of the Abraham Accords, Morocco's official position remains committed to supporting the rights of the Palestinian people and the two-state solution with East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine.
