The visit of the French Minister of Culture to the Sahara sparked anger from the Polisario Front, which condemned it «in the strongest terms» and described it as «illegal».

The separatist front accused France, in a statement, of defying «international law and showing complete contempt for the rights of the Sahrawi people», adding that it considers «this visit a hostile and provocative act» and called on the French government to stop supporting Morocco.

The French Minister of Culture, Rachida Dati, announced yesterday, Monday, in Laayoune, the establishment of a French association in this city with the aim of giving new dynamism to cultural cooperation between France and Morocco, especially in the southern regions. On the same day, she inaugurated a regional branch of the Higher Institute of Audiovisual and Cinema Professions in Dakhla.

The separatist front claimed in its statement that everything being done in the cities of the Sahara «in terms of projects or cultural initiatives» under Morocco's auspices «is invalid and illegal».

The Polisario called on the United Nations, the European Union, UNESCO, and all relevant international bodies «to urgently intervene to prevent the exploitation of culture as a colonial tool», as it described it.
