On Tuesday, March 11, at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, Morocco was unanimously elected to the presidency of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), represented by Amina Bouayach, president of the National Human Rights Council (CNDH). In this role, she represents Africa at the helm of GANHRI, having secured the support of the three other regional components of the Alliance—Americas, Asia-Pacific, and Europe—in a process overseen by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

According to a CNDH statement received by Yabiladi, this marks «a historic moment for African leadership» in the global defense of human rights and in «promoting the role and effectiveness of national institutions in their protection». This election follows the endorsement of Amina Bouayach’s candidacy by the African Network of National Human Rights Institutions (INDH), which formally submitted her nomination in January 2025.

In his speech on the occasion, Joseph Whittall, president of INDH, praised Bouayach’s «exceptional leadership» during her tenure as secretary of GANHRI over the past three years. For her part, Amina Bouayach expressed gratitude for the collective support, calling it «a valuable source of motivation». She added, «I consider this role and position an honor, but also a responsibility whose magnitude I fully understand».

Amina Bouayach succeeds Maryam Al-Attiyah, president of Qatar’s National Human Rights Committee. Meanwhile, Alyson Kilpatrick, president of the Human Rights Commission in Northern Ireland, takes over as secretary of GANHRI, a position previously held by Bouayach.
