During this Ramadan, banana prices in Algeria have soared. In Algiers, a kilo now sells for 850 dinars (about 5.85 euros). Local media blame speculators for the surge, with reports even mentioning the «seizure of significant hidden quantities» of the fruit, according to certain sources.
However, the sharp increase is primarily linked to sanctions imposed by the Algerian government on Ecuador, the country's main banana supplier. The move came in response to Quito's decision to suspend relations with the so-called «Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR)». In January, international agricultural media reported on Algeria’s boycott of Ecuadorian bananas.
Notably, the family of Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa, in office since November 23, 2024, is involved in banana exports.
Additionally, a directive issued by Algeria in January 2024, instructing ships carrying products from South America to avoid the port of Tangier, has further driven up prices for bananas and meat in the Algerian market.
