Morocco condemns Israel's ceasefire violations in Gaza, calling it a «challenge' to peace»

Morocco's Foreign Minister, Nasser Bourita, stated on Thursday that Morocco «strongly» condemns Israel's ceasefire violations in the Gaza Strip. Since Monday, the resumption of occupation actions has resulted in at least 436 deaths. The day before this statement, Rabat approved a resolution from the Arab League on the matter.

Morocco «strongly condemns» the repeated ceasefire violations by Israel, which have resulted in over 436 deaths and more than 500 injuries since Monday in the Gaza Strip. This position was expressed on Thursday in Rabat by Morocco's Foreign Minister, who described the situation as «dangerous and worrying». In response to a question following the 1266th ministerial meeting of the African Union's Peace and Security Council, Nasser Bourita stated that these actions do not contribute to regional stability or a lasting peace solution.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasized that Rabat is closely monitoring the escalation of Israeli actions, which are «condemnable and contrary to peace efforts» against Palestinian civilians in the region. Nasser Bourita reiterated that respecting the ceasefire is an essential first step and a necessary condition for advancing the next stages of a concerted solution involving all stakeholders.

In this context, the head of diplomacy reaffirmed Morocco's longstanding position in favor of a lasting peace, as consistently expressed in line with the vision of King Mohammed VI, president of the Al-Quds Committee. Bourita highlighted that the war has caused «many civilian casualties over a year and a half», actions that the kingdom has «firmly condemned», after which the ceasefire had «offered hope» for a peaceful resolution.

The return of armed operations and the policy of famine pose challenges for the future

As of Wednesday, the Palestinian Ministry of Health reported at least 49,547 fatalities in the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023. In light of this, Bourita expressed deep concern that the prospects for peace are facing a major obstacle due to Israeli actions on the ground, accompanied by a deliberate policy of famine and the obstruction of vital humanitarian aid to the Palestinian population.

Meanwhile, the Israeli occupation army announced ground military operations in the Gaza Strip to «extend the defense zone between the north and south». Bourita's statement came the day after the Arab League Council's resolution in Cairo (Egypt), condemning Israel for its ceasefire violations and the deadly targeting of Palestinian civilians in both Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

During this extraordinary session, convened by Palestine, Morocco was present and approved the resolution through its permanent representative to the League, Mohamed Ait Ouali. The meeting also addressed a memorandum submitted by Palestine regarding Arab and international action in response to the resumption of the Israeli offensive and the consequences of Israel's actions, including the deprivation of electricity, humanitarian aid, medical supplies, and relief in Gaza.
