In Spain, Pedro Sanchez's Socialist Party is taking a firmer stance against the Polisario. On Tuesday, April 1, the PSOE's section in the Navarre Parliament voted against a resolution proposing to recognize the Polisario Front as «the sole and legitimate representative of the Sahrawi people».

The resolution was adopted by the Commission for Coexistence and International Solidarity of the same institution, with notable support from the People's Party, EH Bildu (the Basque separatists), and other regional groups. The text also criticizes Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s support for Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara, which was presented to the United Nations in 2007.

Notably, during its 41st congress in November in Seville, the PSOE did not include the Sahara issue in the official document presented to participants.

It is also worth mentioning that some influential PSOE figures, such as former Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero and former Defense Minister José Bono, regularly participate in conferences organized by the Sahrawi Movement for Peace. Since its creation in April 2020, this movement has challenged the Polisario’s «legitimacy» to solely represent the Sahrawi people.
