Following his visit to Morocco, the United Nations Secretary-General's personal envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, made a stop in Nouakchott. On Wednesday, April 2, he met with Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, as reported by the Mauritanian Information Agency (AMI).
Notably, the Mauritanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, was absent from the meeting, despite being in Nouakchott at the time. He was instead meeting with a minister from Guinea-Bissau on Wednesday.
After his stops in Morocco and Mauritania, De Mistura is expected to visit the Tindouf camps. The Polisario leadership has been preparing for this visit for over a week, with the permanent office of the Front's General Secretariat holding multiple meetings to plan for the UN envoy's arrival.
On April 14, Staffan de Mistura is expected to brief Security Council members on the latest political developments regarding Western Sahara, following the adoption of Resolution 2756 on October 31.
The UN has yet to issue an official statement about De Mistura's visits to the region.
