A Moroccan teenager in an irregular situation has been placed in an administrative detention center in France after filming himself making a Nazi salute in front of the synagogue in Valence. The prefect of the Drôme region has announced his expulsion.
On March 25, a high school student in a preparatory class in Valence recorded himself in front of the downtown synagogue, performing a Hitler salute while broadcasting a Nazi speech, according to local radio station Ici Drôme-Ardèche (formerly France Bleu). He also reportedly took several selfies with his arm extended. An anonymous email alerted the school, which immediately reported the incident to the prosecutor.
Arrested on April 1 and placed in police custody, the teenager admitted to the act but claimed he was under the influence of alcohol. His student visa, which allowed him to continue his studies in France, had become invalid due to unfulfilled administrative requirements with the Drôme prefecture.
Prefect Thierry Devimeux announced that the teenager has been placed in an administrative detention center pending expulsion. «He has been notified of an obligation to leave French territory (OQTF)», Devimeux stated in a press release, condemning «this heinous act with the utmost firmness». He reaffirmed his «determination to fight against anti-Semitism and all forms of racism» and expressed support for «our fellow Jewish citizens».
The high school student is set to appear in court on October 6 in a guilty plea procedure (CRPC) for «advocating a crime or offense». In the meantime, he has been transferred to the administrative detention center in Lyon, awaiting possible expulsion from French territory.
