In Spain, the People's Party (PP) held its 11th congress from July 4th to 6th. As the leading political force in both chambers of Parliament, the party presented participants with a document outlining its current priorities.
On the issue of Western Sahara, the PP reaffirmed its general position, calling for «respect for international law and United Nations resolutions concerning Western Sahara».
As a reminder, in its platform for the early legislative elections of July 23, 2023, the PP had expressed support for «the United Nations’ efforts in Western Sahara to reach a fair, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution». At the time, the party also emphasized «Spain’s responsibilities toward the Sahrawi people».
As with the 2023 program, the new document—reviewed by Yabiladi—makes no mention of organizing a «referendum for the self-determination of the Sahrawi people», a demand that featured in the party’s platforms under the leadership of José María Aznar and Mariano Rajoy.
The document, issued during the July 4–6 congress, also calls for «the most balanced possible relationship with Morocco and Algeria, as we aspire to stability in the Maghreb».
The Polisario Front had previously urged PP leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo to reverse Pedro Sánchez’s decision to support Morocco’s autonomy initiative in Western Sahara. A delegation from the Polisario, led by its representative in Spain, attended the opening session of the PP congress.
In the event of early legislative elections, current polls predict a win for the Popular Party.
