The Primary Court in Salé has fined a member of parliament, affiliated with one of the governing coalition parties, 25,000 dirhams after he was prosecuted for vandalizing public property. The charges stem from a traffic accident he caused while in a state of advanced intoxication. According to Assabah newspaper, the crash resulted in severe damage to an electric pole in the Bouknadel municipality, along with significant damage to the MP’s vehicle.
The ruling has been appealed, and the appellate misdemeanors chamber is expected to review the case. Legal sources anticipate that the compensation awarded to the affected territorial community may be increased, given the extent of the damage and the aggravating circumstances.
The Royal Gendarmerie quickly responded to the accident and found that the driver was a well-known local MP. He had been returning from Kenitra to Salé after leaving a bar. The public prosecutor’s office was immediately informed and ordered the necessary legal measures to be taken.
The parliamentarian spent the night in custody and was formally questioned before being presented to the public prosecutor while still under arrest.
Following an inspection of the damaged infrastructure by a joint committee, the territorial community under Salé province filed as a civil party in the case, pursuing damages as part of its legal action to defend public property.
