French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau has decided to revoke the residency permit of the Moroccan national arrested for desecrating the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. As reported by Europe1 and confirmed by Le Figaro on Wednesday, the decision followed the man’s arrest after he was identified in a video showing the offensive acts.
The 47-year-old suspect, reportedly homeless and already known to law enforcement, has a history of previous offenses, including car theft, vandalism, assault, and racially motivated public insults. His visa was valid until October 2025.
According to the same sources, the man remained in police custody as of Wednesday midday. He is being charged with «desecration of a tomb, grave, funerary urn, or monument erected in memory of the dead», an offense punishable under French law by up to one year in prison and a €15,000 fine.
The incident was captured on video, showing the individual climbing over barriers, kneeling on the overturned commemorative shield, lighting a cigarette using the eternal flame, then stepping over the railing and walking away, all in front of several bystanders who had come to pay their respects.
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, located beneath the Arc de Triomphe since November 11, 1920, honors the memory of those who died for France during World War I. According to media reports, the video was filmed on the evening of Monday, August 4, before being posted on TikTok.
