On August 2, former U.S. President Donald Trump reaffirmed his support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara in a message to King Mohammed VI on the occasion of Throne Day. This position, first announced on December 10, 2020, stated that «the United States of America recognizes Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara and supports the Moroccan Autonomy Proposal—deemed serious, credible, and realistic—as the only basis for a just and lasting resolution of this dispute», Trump wrote.

A week after this high-profile declaration, Algeria has yet to issue an official response, a stark contrast to the swift political and economic measures it took against Spain in March 2022 and France in August 2024 following their endorsement of Morocco’s 2007 autonomy plan.

This muted reaction from Algiers is not unexpected. For example, in an April 9 statement released after talks between Marco Rubio and Nasser Bourita, Algerian diplomacy merely «took note of the confirmation by the U.S. State Department of its position, which considers the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty as the only solution to the conflict». The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also voiced its «regrets» that such a stance came from «a permanent member of the Security Council, expected to respect international law in general and Security Council resolutions in particular».

A similar response was issued when the United Kingdom announced its support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative, with the ministry lamenting «the United Kingdom’s choice to support the Moroccan autonomy plan».

As of now, the Polisario Front has also remained silent on Trump’s latest message to King Mohammed VI.
